RAIZI / FIELD NOTES

Scored straight Broke off line

The scoring wheel followed the line. The break didn’t. Before the next attempt, check the tile, the score and the cutter setup.

SCORE LINE / FRACTURETop view of a tile. A straight blue line marks the score. A white line diverges from it to illustrate a possible fracture path.
Score line and fracture path — an explanatory diagram, not a test result.

Scoring is the first stage

The scoring wheel scores the surface. Breaking separates the tile. A straight mark on the face does not guarantee a straight break; the material’s properties matter too.1

Test the tile you’re using

Test the same tile material, using a piece large enough to reproduce the job’s cut length, strip width and support arrangement. Match the cut layout: straight or diagonal. Record the tile thickness. Inspect the full score line and where the fracture leaves it. Change one variable for the next trial and compare the result.2

Check the cutter and scoring wheel

Check that the cutter and scoring wheel suit the material and its thickness. Follow your model’s instructions for tile support and breaker positioning. One successful cut does not establish repeatability.2

Inspect the whole edge

Check the full length and both ends. If the edge will stay exposed, judge it after the planned finishing work. Record time spent finishing and tiles wasted, too. For narrow strips, use the card in “Narrow strip. Test it first.”.

A wet saw still needs a trial

If manual cutting gives an unacceptable result, test a suitable wet saw. Match the blade to the material and the machine. “Diamond blade” alone does not identify its intended use.23

PUPPY

Line alignment

The green laser helps you position the tile against the cutting line. A covered, steel-reinforced guide keeps the carriage on track as you score.

Support and adjustment

The 300 mm-wide sprung base supports the tile. Adjust the handle length for your working position and the scoring-wheel height to suit the tile.

BIGDOG

A different cutting method

BigDog cuts through the material with a water-cooled blade and manual or automatic feed. Consider it when scoring and snapping do not give the edge you need.

Test the setup on the same material before starting work. Match the scoring wheel or blade to the material and the machine.
